QEWI (Qualified Exterior Wall Inspector)
A QEWI is a NY State–licensed Professional Engineer or Registered Architect with at least seven years of relevant experience with façades over six stories and DOB approval, authorized by the NYC Department of Buildings to perform and file FISP inspections. Only a QEWI can sign the FISP filing.
Frequently asked questions
Can a contractor serve as QEWI?
No. Only a licensed PE or RA can hold the QEWI designation. Contractors execute the repairs; the QEWI inspects, classifies, and files.
Should we use the same QEWI as our last cycle?
Often yes — continuity reduces re-inspection effort and the new QEWI doesn't need to rebuild understanding of the building. But a board concerned about prior cycle classifications (especially a quiet SWARMP) is well within rights to commission a fresh QEWI for an independent read.
What does QEWI engagement typically cost?
Request a building-specific scope and quote from qualified firms. Height, façade materials, access, and report requirements affect the work; inspection and repair costs are separate.
